Our gingerbread house this year. I don’t want to talk about it.
Flaunt - No more badgifting!
Okay, so, I don’t know about the rest of you domestic lovelies, but I get crappy presents every. year. And a brand new website is hoping to end that trend, by using your facebook “likes” to generate gift recommendations (you can edit your own wishlist, and add items from any online retailer manually) that you can also gather for your facebook friends and family. This means you can copy and paste that fabulous ruffled pinafore from Etsy into your Flaunt wishlist and any of your friends can see that you want it and get it for you. YES. You can also set budgets for each person on your list if you want to, and keep track of what you plan to purchase for them in a shopping list setting. Check it out!
Who are all these people who buy gifts upon gifts for eachother?! I buy gifts for my son and whichever two nieces and/or nephews whose names I drew. I get gifts from… my partner’s parents generally buy us one joint gift. This is it. If anyone else in my life buys me a gift I feel incredibly uncomfortable and like a dick because I didn’t get anyone anything. I don’t know how to buy gifts for anyone other than small children. How do all of these people afford to buy gifts for all of their friends and family? Am I just bizarre for being raised without much gift giving?
Those would be the people whose love language is gift giving, and who aren’t so adept at knitting. I wouldn’t say your upbringing and choices are bizarre, but I also wouldn’t say there’s anything wrong with those of us who choose - among other ways - to show our affection for one another this way. In our family, we give because we enjoy it, not because we expect to receive stuff in return. I plan to use the service very specifically for my family members, because I have a kid brother who is in college and constantly needing little things he can’t afford for himself plus I have several family members who tend to just get what they want for themselves and have a hard time thinking, around the holidays, what they might want or need, and for a couple of close friends in whom I delight in giving little gifts because they’re the kind of people who appreciate them. I afford this by budgeting and making giftgiving a priority. Other people take vacations or buy themselves new clothes and entertainment items; I give my friends and family stuff during the holidays.
When did it become a bad thing to give gifts?

I have always wanted paper flowers from books at my wedding. I even have a book or two set aside specifically to make them.

Roasted Yam Wedges and Masala Scallops
Okay, guys, dinner was so good tonight.
I roasted yam wedges and did some stovetop scallops.
Here are the wedges:

I cut them into about (very approximately) 1” wedges, leaving the skins on, after scrubbing them down. Then I tossed them in light olive oil, salt, nutmeg, and clove, and roasted them at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. At that point I flipped them, and roasted them for another 15 minutes. You can use a large Pyrex pan or a cookie sheet; I happened to use both, because we did up two yams.
How they turned out (with Stubbs’ spicy barbecue sauce):
Basically, yam jojos. Nummy.
I also coated scallops in masala spice:

And cooked them at medium heat for a bit (trying to keep an eye on translucence in the cracks (because you want them opaque inside), using a little olive oil cooking spray. (Trader Joe’s carries it totally affordable.)

After I fried them, I topped them with goat cheese to cut some of the spice and add a creamy layer to the sharpness of this dish:

Honestly, next time I’d only do one side in masala; the spice was REALLY potent, and it was hard to keep an eye on the internal cooking.
So happy with dinner tonight, though. Paired with Yalumba red blend (Shiraz-Viognier 2008). So yummy.
